For example, one of the current trends in home hardware is minimalist. That means you need to have items that are minimal in size when it comes to your home. So, how can you make some changes to your home without totally redoing everything and still staying up with the fashion trends? One of the easiest answers may have to do with taking a closer look at the cabinets that are in your home. Have you really taken a close look at them recently? Are they looking a little old? A little worn? A little outdated?

Now that you are taking them in you may be thinking it's time to rip out all of those cabinets and to replace them with something new. Don't go so fast! If you have small or average sized cabinets, you may want to leave them just where they are. Remember, the trend is minimalist, so if you already have a small set of cabinets, they are doing just fine in the size category. Maybe they just need to be spruced up a bit.

One of the easiest ways to make a set of cabinets look new again is to repaint or stain them and change out the drawer pulls and other cabinets on them. Most people don't think that just a fresh coat of paint and a few pieces of metal can make a difference, but you may be amazed at just how different those old cabinets can look with these simple changes.

It's time to do a little planning.

First do you want to change the complete look of your cabinets? If so you need to consider whether you want to stain them a different color, if they have a natural wood look, or if you want to change the color of them with a coat of paint. No matter which way you are going to go, the best option is to strip down whatever finish is on them now and then to put on the new coat. Make sure to take all of the hardware off of the cabinets and drawers before you do this.

Next you need to decide on the hardware you are going to use. Some of this decision may have a lot to do with which type of finish you choose for your cabinets, as not all types and colors of drawer pulls are going to go with all finishes. Also remember, the current trend is for minimalist pieces so you want to look at pulls and knobs that are relatively small to keep them fashionable.
